Are You Too Lazy to Become a Successful Writer?
Every night, after my evening meal, I sit down in my favourite pale timber and navy cushioned reclining chair, set a steaming cup of golden brown English tea on the rainbow coloured makeshift table beside me, pull out my grimy, fingerprint smeared smartphone and begin to read.
I read the news — local and international — to get a grasp on current affairs. Afterwards, I check in on the sports world — mainly soccer and MMA —to catch up on the latest goings-on in the English Premier League and the UFC. Then, as a grand finale to the evening’s routine, a visit to my favourite reading and writing platform — Medium — to indulge in a variety of stories, views and opinions from my fellow Medium writers.
It’s a daily ritual I’ve come to love and one of the best ways I’ve found to unwind after a busy day.
However, as I kick back like a king on his throne and appease my curiosity for knowledge with a plethora of articles, opinion pieces and stories, the same thought trickles through my mind like a stream navigating the jungle.
It’s a mishmashed thought of both jealousy and frustration.
Because, as I read the work of others and lose myself in their talents, it becomes clear to me that in order to ‘make it’ as a successful writer you’ve got to do one important thing. You’ve got to produce captivating, engaging content that’s worth reading and at the moment, that’s something I can’t seem to do and here’s why.
I’m lazy.
While other writers — the good ones — are doing their research, sharing links to their findings and providing in-depth thought to their creations, I’m too busy taking the easy route; pushing on through my articles with minimum thought, getting straight to the point and rushing to hit the publish button so I can move on to the next piece.
With me, there’s no captivating content. No well-thought-out material and no worthwhile reading.
It’s such an underwhelming experience.
